Floyd Eugene “Gene” Moore, 87, of Iola died Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Windsor Place Nursing Center in Iola.
He was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Humboldt, to William Fred and Mary Estes (Collison) Moore. He grew up in Humboldt where he graduated from high school. He attended a year at Neosho County Junior College in Chanute before joining the U.S. Navy where he served in the Southern Pacific during World War II.
He married Hazel Lou Erickson in 1946, and they made their home in Emporia for most of their married life. She died Dec. 5, 2002. He moved to Iola a few years later and on Oct. 27, 2007, he married Norma Jewell (Morelan) Griffith at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. They made their home in Iola.
He was a retired clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad. His memberships include Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola and the Masonic Lodge in Savonburg. Woodworking was a hobby he enjoyed.
His wife survives at the home, as does a son, Fred E. Moore, Osage City; a daughter, Jan Duerksen, Denver, Colo.; a stepson, Bill Griffith and his wife, Diane, Leavenworth; two sisters, Verna Mae Devine, Iola, and Phyllis Stroud and her husband, Gary, Topeka; five grandchildren, Jaimey, Marcus, Derek, Benjamin and Matthew; three stepgrandchildren, Geoffrey, Rebecca and Ryan; two great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
A nephew, Brad Stroud, died earlier.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. The Rev. Trudy Kenyon Anderson will officiate.
Visitation will be at the church an hour prior to services.
Inurnment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt.
